Chapter 4670 Desperate Escape (42)
Chapter 4670 A desperate escape (Forty-two)
Greed jolted awake, staring incredulously in that direction: "Arrogance?"
Of course, he knew that Arrogance had participated, but he didn't believe he would be lucky enough to run into Arrogance directly.
Arrogance knelt down in front of him, touched his forehead, and then followed his hand to his wound. The moment he touched the wound, Arrogance froze.
"Who did this?" His voice turned cold.
"Hiss...who else could it be..." Greed gritted his teeth, "Batman, of course!"
"Let me confirm first, what you're saying isn't..."
“It wasn’t your good student, but he was chasing me too. I hit him, maybe broke his arm…” Greed seemed a little guilty. “It’s not my fault. I was just trying to escape…”
“Lie down first,” said Arrogance. “Let me check your wound.”
Greed slowly lay down, but an even more intense wave of dizziness washed over him. He gritted his teeth to keep from passing out, but soon he didn't need to grit his teeth anymore, because Pride reached into his wound.
"Ugh—!!!" Greedy straightened up abruptly in pain.
However, Arrogance quickly gave up, saying, "Severe internal bleeding. Under normal circumstances, you definitely won't survive. Think about it, do you want to leave now, or should I take you out first?"
Greedy squeezed his eyes shut for a second, mentally cursing Batman for another five minutes: "Not killing is a lie!!!"
"Judging from the direction of the stab, he really didn't intend to kill you. If you had just stayed where you were and surrendered, you probably wouldn't have died. But who told you to run and jump, and even throw yourself off such a height? Did you think you were Superman?"
"Then I'd rather kill myself!" Greed said viciously.
He took a couple more breaths and then said, "I'll leave now. Then you take the body to the central energy room and meet up with them."
Arrogance nodded. He went to the front of Greed's head, lifted his upper body, supporting his chin with one hand and grabbing his shoulder with the other. With a "crack," the person in his arms became a corpse.
Greed, having escaped the corpse, returned to the battle arena, slamming his fist on the table in fury. Unexpectedly, he became the first organizer to be eliminated—Batman was entirely responsible!
Greed truly hadn't expected that in the mere second it took him to fall above the cubicle, Batman would deliver a brutal blow. Nobody could react in time, right?
Even as Batman made his move, Greed didn't sense his malice. Otherwise, he might have been able to avoid it beforehand. This guy is incredibly dangerous.
He stormed back to the monitoring room, only to find the detective sitting there with coffee in hand, legs crossed, leisurely watching the show.
Greed walked over and slammed his fist on the table: "You damned traitor!"
"It doesn't feel good to be tricked by Batman, does it?" the agent grinned.
Greedy crossed his arms and sulked, remaining silent. This was the first time he had directly experienced Batman's power; indeed, one couldn't get too close to this guy when fighting, or one was guaranteed to suffer.
The agent handed him a cup of coffee, but he greedily refused to drink it. The agent then persuaded him, "You know, Batman was very strong when he was chasing you, and he's just as strong when he's chasing others. You're already gone; now, isn't it a good time to watch them get chased?"
Greed paused for a moment, then his anger vanished instantly. The detective was right.
When Batman was hunting him down, he was a damned killer and a relentless ghost. But he was the same way when he was hunting others. He's out of the game now, but his good colleagues are still on it.
He was so ruthless when he stabbed himself, he won't hold back when he beats up these guys. We have to see this show!
Greed immediately took the coffee, sat down next to the agent, blew on the scalding hot coffee, took a small sip, let out a long breath, and then said, "Quick, quick, check on the others."
The other people are really not that great.
Let's start with the Joker. Actually, his smooth talk and tricks would have worked well for any other group hunting him down. But unfortunately, Thor was completely unmoved by his tactics.
The only tricks in this world that could work on Thor were those devised by Loki. Thor's entire life exemplifies the saying, "You can pretend to be smart, but you can't be truly stupid." His usual antics with his brother, like falling into traps or schemes, are just minor squabbles between brothers. If he were truly foolish, how could he have conquered Asgard for a thousand years without incident and still earned the admiration of so many?
After the Joker rushed back into his original checkpoint, he jumped down as well. He intended to enter the staff passage, but Thor was too fast; he jumped right after the Joker. The Joker had just lifted his foot to run when Thor pinned him down.
"No, no, no!" the clown cried. "I'm innocent! They tricked me into coming here. I'll tell you everything, just let me go..."
To reiterate, anyone else might have listened to his explanation, since it sounds like part of the story. In fact, it is indeed a line from the Joker. Because in the original storyline, he was the unfortunate wealthy man who was tricked. This line mainly serves to foreshadow why the company wanted to silence him.
The gist of the story is that the wealthy man, played by the Joker, feels the current format isn't enough and wants to create a bigger, more luxurious battle royale game with even more wealthy individuals participating. However, the company strongly disagrees, so he decides to break away and go solo.
The company certainly couldn't allow that, because if this guy caused trouble, their own actions might also be exposed. So they took the opportunity to call him over, planted a mole among the wealthy businessmen in the same industry, and thought they might as well just kill him.
This would both thwart his plans and warn other wealthy individuals not to easily get involved in the game; they should just observe. If they actually participate, this is the consequence.
The Joker's lines were all memorized, but Thor was also a skipper. Mainly because, through years of warfare, he'd heard more excuses from prisoners than branches grew on the World Tree. They were all bizarre and outlandish, the vast majority fabricated. Often, after listening to their stories, he'd find nothing but nonsense and hidden traps. Over time, he developed the habit of killing first and questioning later.
"Bang!" Thor grabbed the Joker by the collar and punched him in the face. Then another punch, and another…
Loki couldn't stand it anymore. He nudged Thor and said, "Don't make it so bloody. Just give him a quick death."
Thor had originally intended to kill him with his bare hands, one punch at a time; he had no intention of holding back against his enemies. But since Loki had spoken up, he simply stepped on the Joker's chest, grabbed his head, and yanked it out. The Joker's entire head was ripped off.
Thor grinned at Loki, who took two steps back in disgust: "I told you, don't make it so bloody, it's disgusting."
Thor casually tossed his head aside. Greed, watching from the monitoring room, slapped his thigh and cheered, but before he could finish his shout, the Joker rushed over and grabbed him by the neck. He spat out his coffee.
Greed turned around, broke free from the clown, and pushed him to the ground, where the two began to wrestle.
After fighting for a while, neither of them managed to get anything out of the other. The two men, somewhat disheveled, stood up. The clown, panting heavily, said, "Look at this lousy plot you designed! And this lousy level design!"
"Didn't you insist on coming when you heard Batman was coming?!" Greed retorted, not to be outdone. "And now you're getting angry because you haven't received a single glance from Batman the entire time?!"
"That's true. Batman's attention is entirely focused on his good friend Superman; they're like hand and glove. And you? He's never acknowledged any nemesis relationship with you. You're just a one-sided, self-righteous clown!"
The two started fighting again.
The scarecrow couldn't escape either. He was even more unlucky. He wanted to take refuge in the next level, but when he got there, he forgot where the employee entrance was. After all, this level was probably designed a month or two ago, and the next level wasn't his responsibility. He also couldn't remember the specific map, and Charles and Eric caught him red-handed.
The Scarecrow was even less capable of resisting. Don't be fooled by Charles and Eric's powerful mutant abilities; both lived during wartime, and Eric had even fought in battles. The Scarecrow, a university professor, was no match for either of them in hand-to-hand combat. He might not even be able to defeat Charles after his leg was healed, let alone Eric.
Eric gave him a quick death—he grabbed the iron rod and pressed it against the scarecrow's right eyeball, sending it piercing straight into the brain with a "plop." The screams didn't come until he returned to the monitoring room.
The scarecrow was clearly on the clown's side. They both believed that the problem lay in the greedy level design. If he hadn't created that ring, the lantern wouldn't have been slapped away, and they wouldn't have been displaced and captured.
As for why no one is bothering the key mole agent, one reason is that they don't yet know the agent altered the ticket. Another reason is, how much can you expect from the police? He's already said he's an FBI agent; he's as good at closing doors as he is at opening them. What's the point of arguing with someone like that?
Greed explained, "Even if the lantern was blown away, we shouldn't have been so weak. The main problem was that we didn't achieve our goal in the first three games."
"The very act of reading out the rules was meant to imply that they shouldn't draw. If there's no draw, and the game starts, someone will definitely get injured. Even if it's not a severed arm or leg, there will definitely be a lot of bloodshed. When they're injured and weakened, they won't be able to catch up with us."
"Who knew they'd be so lucky? They didn't even get a chance to play in the first three rounds. It shouldn't be like that, with Schiller and Batman. Shouldn't they be incredibly unlucky?"
Greed is truly baffling. But he was so preoccupied with his own doubts that he didn't see the agent, who was drinking coffee, slowly lower his head. This wasn't good luck at all; it was simply that someone was bearing the burden for them.
The agent knew that Greed's arrangement was actually quite sound. Making them sacrifice blood or parts in the first three games would effectively weaken them. Then, they would push out the Joker's mole and make them chase after him. It seemed like letting them vent their anger, but in reality, venting was worse than not venting at all. On one hand, it was a waste of energy, and on the other hand, without the support of anger, people are easily discouraged.
By then, your wounds will hurt, you'll be dizzy from blood loss, and the anger and urge to avenge your enemies will have vanished, your adrenaline will quickly wear off. The next two levels will be even harder. Maybe you can finally wipe them all out in the final, most difficult level.
The plan was perfect, but man proposes, God disposes. The detective took another sip of coffee. So what if they're police? Police are here to uphold justice!
Not long after, Mephisto, who had been cornered by Harley and Pamela, arrived. He wasn't particularly angry, just a little helpless, and shrugged, saying, "That little girl is really short-tempered. Now I have two more holes in my body than Jesus."
Unexpectedly, Stark, who seemed to have the least power to resist, was the one who survived to the end. Everyone in the monitoring room sat in a row, ready to see how he died.
