Chapter 4542 The Day of Brightest Light (Part 1)
Seven days before the sun goes out.
Ron sat in the conference room at the Justice League headquarters. He had arrived at 7:30, but it was now 9:00. He was still the only one in the conference room. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't that he came so early voluntarily; it was because Billy's school hours were longer than the Justice League's working hours, and he had to get up early to take his child to school.
Ron yawned and popped another Oreo into his mouth. Spending so much time with the Justice League had made him a bit lazy, and he was thinking of taking a nap in the lounge after the meeting.
People didn't start arriving until 9:30. They greeted each other with yawns, saying things like "Good morning" or "Good morning." Only Diana, who was relatively diligent, went to the lounge to make coffee for them; the others said "Thank you for your hard work" but didn't even lift a finger.
Ron looked at Clark with some surprise. Usually at this time, Superman would walk into the break room, tap Diana on the shoulder, and signal that he would take over the work. Perhaps due to his upbringing, Clark retained some very simple-minded redneck habits. Simply put, he felt that the elderly, women, and children needed care. When everyone was equally tired, it wasn't good to let women do the work, so he would always take over Diana's tasks.
Diana didn't like it, but she couldn't persuade Clark otherwise. Ron knew it wasn't out of any sexism; Diana was just embarrassed to say that Clark's coffee was always scalding hot, and not everyone had a super-hot palate like him.
But today, unusually, Clark was propping his head up with his hand, his bright blue eyes appearing and disappearing intermittently. Ron glanced at him and knew he had been working on the farm all night.
"Is there any need to be in such a hurry?" Ron said in Clark's mind so as not to disturb the others who were dozing off.
“Oh, never mind me, Ron. You know, who knows what kind of trouble that Black Death Emperor will cause. I need to harvest the barley at the Kent farm first, and then go to Mexico to harvest the corn to prevent it from rotting in the fields. That’s how it is during the busy farming season. Not to mention me, even Hail is exhausted.”
"Isn't that a bit much?" Rong En said with some doubt. "Two beams of light should have collected them all, right?"
"Yes, but harvesting the crops is only the first step. They also need to be dried, threshed, inspected, packaged, and transported. In order to repair the tractors on the Guadalajara mountain road within the right time and get the crops out before the rains arrive, Haier traveled through time thirteen times in one day..."
"And Oliver, is he alright?"
"I don't know, you should ask him, but I don't think he'll be able to come today. He hurt his foot on a corn stalk. Being a farmer isn't easy."
Ron immediately connected to Oliver's channel. But Oliver was somewhat delirious, and he mumbled, "I won't go. My foot wound is a bit infected, and I have a fever right now. Send me the meeting minutes after the meeting."
Ron jumped to his feet, but then sat back down. Oliver had said, "Don't make a fuss over me. I can use this injury to rest for a few days and avoid fighting those damn corn cobs."
Rong En sighed deeply. Actually, the situation in Mexico had improved considerably since the arrival of the Brenillac government. However, the problem was that Guadalajara had started too late and was still primarily based on basic agriculture; its infrastructure hadn't been fully upgraded. This resulted in transportation problems even with mechanized production.
Because the previous revolution had been so intense and its direction somewhat skewed, public resistance was strong, and various conspiracy theories against the Brainiac government were rampant. Although it wouldn't harm Brainiac, it would certainly affect production. Oliver had to use his influence again to organize the people; he'd been running around like a headless chicken for the past two days.
Even Ron, a Martian, could see that Oliver had significant limitations. Compared to those extremely successful revolutionaries, he wasn't tough enough, lacked decisiveness, and was solely focused on creating a win-win situation for everyone, yet he was also a self-sacrificing idealist. So even if it was thankless work, he still did it, making him arguably the last vestige of glory for the Off-Workers Alliance.
However, now that he's honorably off work, there's even less anyone to restrain these lazy guys. Rong En has a feeling they'll probably do a lot of work to avoid labor.
Then, around ten o'clock, Bruce finally arrived. Fortunately, he wasn't really late. As soon as he arrived, he put a document on the table and said, "This is what I retrieved from Heaven's backend system. Now it's confirmed that the Black Death Emperor is targeting us."
Bruce paused for a moment, then continued, "Considering the trouble he suffered in previous universes, I don't think he'll resort to the same divisive tactics again. So my parents and all of you deceased relatives here should not be at risk of being resurrected."
Everyone sighed. Diana even yelled, "Stop telling such lame jokes!"
“Okay, let’s get down to business,” Bruce said. “He doesn’t have many options left if he doesn’t try to sow discord. Considering he chose our universe because I seem to be the least reliable Batman, he might try a direct assault.”
“Well, he certainly has a keen eye.” Arthur nodded.
"I misspoke. I should have said that the Justice League in our universe is the most unreliable in the entire multiverse."
"Truly astute observation." Diana crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair.
“Don’t say that,” Bruce said, pursing his lips in dissatisfaction. “Isn’t it possible that our current situation is reasonable, and that the person dressed as Batman is the one who’s crazy?”
“What are you planning to do?” Clark asked him.
"The so-called 'strong attack' is nothing more than causing mass casualties on Earth, then turning them into zombies, creating a zombie siege. To achieve this, we can probably only use natural disasters. If you have some knowledge of paleontology, you should understand that the several mass extinctions on Earth were basically caused by temperature changes due to various reasons."
"Changes in Earth's temperature would bring about extremely deadly disasters. The extreme drought caused by massive volcanic eruptions turned the once supercontinent Pangaea into a giant sandbox. Millions of years of extreme rainfall have left animals that had painstakingly adapted to the desert environment disoriented. If it were me, I would change Earth's temperature to exterminate humanity just as I did those ancient creatures."
"The difference between humans and those ancient creatures is that we chose to develop brains and then established civilizations. This makes it much harder for volcanic eruptions or meteorite impacts to destroy us. Heating the Earth has become difficult. But if we could cool the Earth, it would also lead to massive casualties."
"The vast majority of Earth's heat comes from the sun. By simply tampering with the sun, humanity could be easily destroyed. So I think he might target the sun."
Bruce turned to the next page of the document and continued, "Furthermore, because he suffered a great loss at Superman's hands before, and knowing that extinguishing the sun could severely injure Superman, he wouldn't hesitate to do so."
Diana couldn't help but applaud him, and then said, "You deduced all of this?"
"Of course not. As I said, I checked the backend files. There are obvious data anomalies in our sun, which means he must have selected the sun as the point of power intrusion."
“Next time, just tell me the result,” Arthur said. “Mera and I are busy trying to conceive, and I have to leave soon.”
"In broad daylight..."
“I’m asking you, when is night in the deep sea?” Arthur sighed. “And do you think it’s so easy for Atlanteans to mate? I’m a hybrid, and I still can’t conjure a fish tail.”
"Then you can't use human form..." Diana said with some curiosity.
“No. Atlanteans need to engage in high-speed chases in the sea, constantly flushing their reproductive cavities, to enter estrus so that sperm and egg can combine. But without a tail, I simply can't catch Mera. Not to mention the subsequent mating…”
"Atlantis was a land-based civilization back then, so how did it become so... primitive after it sank into the water?" Rong En asked.
"Firstly, it's to adapt to the deep-sea environment, and secondly, it's to limit population growth. The resources on the seabed are too scarce to support so many Atlanteans. Therefore, the birth rate has been declining year by year, and the conditions for childbirth have become very stringent." Arthur said, scratching his head. "Can you believe it? Our child will be born as an egg, and I'll have to incubate it! And there's no guarantee it will even hatch!"
"That's not right. What happened between your mother and father back then...?"
"If I were a pure-blooded human, I probably could too. Humans are very special; they can mate directly with almost any life form on Earth and improve the bloodlines of other races. But unfortunately, I am a hybrid, with neither bloodline being pure, which is why I am the way I am now."
Diana patted him on the shoulder and said, "It's okay, you'll get better with practice. If it really doesn't work, we're all eggs anyway, we can just ask someone for one to incubate."
"That won't do. I have to continue my human bloodline so that my descendants can be strong enough."
As the conversation veered off course, Rong En cleared his throat and said, "Let's talk about the Black Death Emperor. What should we do if he plans to attack the Sun?"
“If his power comes from within, then a shield doesn’t seem to be very effective,” Diana said thoughtfully. “So how do we stop him?”
"Why should we stop him?" Bruce countered. "This is a golden opportunity."
"What do you mean?" Everyone looked at him.
Don't you find them annoying?
"You mean the Black Death Emperor? That guy's always hiding his true colors, he's really annoying. Ugly people always cause trouble," Arthur said.
"Not only the Black Death Emperor, but also Darkseid who cooperates with him, and that gang of Batmen. How they fight in the multiverse is none of our business. But why do they have to come and disrupt our lives?"
These words truly expressed everyone's feelings. It's not that they don't care about the multiverse, otherwise they wouldn't be contacting other counterparts. But they also have their own lives. It's fine to actively save the universe during work hours, but you can't disturb our private lives after get off work. Can't you have some boundaries?
It's like you're discussing a business deal with a client, and then they and their colleagues come to your house over the weekend. Forget about working overtime, this kind of invasion of personal space is just incredibly rude.
Besides, they weren't idle. There was so much work to do inside and outside the house: farming, raising children, developing technology, and researching magic. Brainiac, who had been hired as a helper, turned out to be a pair of parents skilled at inventing household chores, who were constantly being bossed around even when they were home on vacation. They were already exhausted, and now outsiders were coming to disrupt things. Every morning, the first thing they wanted to do was swing on a swing in the house.
After a round of complaints, everyone turned to look at Bruce. They all knew this guy was cunning; it would be best if he could give these guys a ruthless lesson, letting all the good and bad guys in the multiverse know they weren't pushovers. This would greatly reduce their workload later.
“I have an idea,” Bruce said, snapping his fingers, “that will ensure they never dare to come back again.”
