Chapter 4472 The Black Death (End)
Clark looked bewildered. He said, "Me? But aren't you the one who is..."
Hal deliberately raised his voice: "I'm infected! Have you forgotten? When I was resurrected, I was already infected by the power of death, and it had already corrupted me quite deeply. Now, you are the one whose corruption is the least, and White Lantern is the most likely to choose you as its host!"
Clark suddenly realized and hurriedly flew towards the lantern ring. Whoever could become the White Lantern Lantern, as long as they were one of their own, was fine. But this White Lantern ring might be limited edition; if it were destroyed by the Black Death Emperor's people, then they would be completely finished.
Clark accelerated to top speed, almost instantly appearing beside the lamp ring, but Kalibak was no slower. He shook off the Kryptonians and threw a punch at Clark.
Clark, not to be outdone, tried to grab the ring while dodging. Kalibak, however, wouldn't let him succeed, and the two battled for the ring.
Hal wanted to pounce on them and snatch the ring, but the commotion from their fight was too great, and he was afraid of getting hurt. So, he pretended to lure Kalibak away and approached the ring himself.
However, Calibak didn't fall for his trick, perhaps because Hal's earlier words had taken effect. Calibak may seem rude, but he's not stupid; a little deduction tells him that among those present, Superman is the most likely candidate to become the White Lantern. As long as he's stopped, the others are no threat.
The two of them were exchanging blows around the ring, and Hal had no chance to intervene; he could only offer ranged attacks from the sidelines.
Fortunately, Clark, in his haste, unleashed a level of strength far exceeding his usual abilities, and for a time he was on the verge of defeating Kalibak, knocking him back below the surface of the sea.
Hal was about to rush over and snatch the ring, but suddenly a bad feeling flashed through his mind. He paused, stopped in front of the ring, and then, in an instant, a flash of red light struck Superman, who was fighting with Calibak.
Instantly, Superman plummeted to the ground. Hal snatched the ring, the oath echoing in his mind.
"The brightest day will eventually bring light, washing away the soul's errors. When darkness falls, look up; when the new day arrives, its light is boundless!"
Instantly, the ring shone brightly. Hal's uniform, imbued with the power of life, turned pure white. His eyes also shone with a rich light, and his entire being appeared as pure as a newborn.
But he didn't have time to savor the moment for long before plummeting down and embracing Superman. The instant he touched Clark, Hal nearly broke down, because he sensed that Clark was dead.
This wasn't a fake death; he truly showed no vital signs. Hal gritted his teeth. What exactly was that beam of light just now? It could actually kill Superman instantly?!
Kalibak seemed to sense his confusion and roared, "He was killed by His Majesty Darkseid's Omega Ray! Superman is dead!!!"
Hal didn't care what the Omega Rays actually were. A flash of light appeared in his eyes, and a dense life force poured into Superman's body. The white light was so intense that it obscured everyone's vision, like a newly risen sun.
The power of life dispelled the dark clouds. Hal, embracing Superman's body, flew into the shattered sunlight. The sun, once again mercifully, bestowed its supreme blessings upon this son of the sun.
Thump, thump, thump.
His heartbeat grew from faint to strong. His heart resonated with the pulse of the earth. From life to death, and from death to life, it was only a few seconds. But Clark had a very long dream.
Traversing the Earth's crust, passing over layers of rock walls, one sees countless fossilized skeletons piled up in the thick soil and rock, until finally, in the scorching core of the Earth, one sees a pair of bright white eyes.
"The spirit of existence..."
Clark called out his name. The other person smiled in response. Then, Clark suddenly woke up.
“A spirit of existence?” Hal repeated the word Clark had been muttering. “What is that? What did you see?”
“Its name,” Clark murmured, “the source of life force—the Spirit of Being.”
Then he came to his senses, touched his chest, and said, "Have I been resurrected?"
“That’s right,” Hal nodded and said, “You were killed by some Omega Ray. It must have been Darkseid’s doing. Anyway, I have to go destroy those Black Lantern Rings.”
Clark waved his hand. Hal immediately went to hunt down Kalibak and Atlan, mainly to retrieve their rings, otherwise they might show up again to annoy people one day.
Clark looked down at his chest again, unable to believe he was truly resurrected, and he felt nothing unusual. Was this an unconditional resurrection?
The moment he landed on the ground, he suddenly felt a thought pop into his head: "No, you are special."
Clark's eyes widened. He asked in his mind, "Is it you? The Spirit of Being?"
"I am merely its agent." The voice gradually became clearer.
"You're also White Lantern?"
There was no response. Clark pressed for an answer a few more times, but received no reply, so he gave up. He sighed and prepared to go back and ask Batman.
Clark tensed up again at the thought of Batman. He had to go check on Batman as soon as possible.
When they returned to Wayne Manor, everyone was there, including the infected Barry and Diana, as well as the wounded Arthur. Batman was treating them, but of course, he could only treat the superficial wounds, not the infection; that would have to wait for Hal to return.
“That’s great, you’re all alright,” Clark said sincerely. “It’ll be over soon.”
“Not at all,” Diana said gravely. “Do you know that a terrifying attack that spanned half the universe just struck Earth?”
Clark paused, then said, "Omega rays?"
Batman looked at him, and Clark explained, "That guy named Calibak said it was Darkseid who used the Omega Ray. That thing successfully killed me, but I was resurrected by the Spirit of Existence."
A commotion erupted among the crowd. Diana kept glancing at Clark, seemingly trying to discern if there was anything unusual about him. Clark shook his head and said, "I'm fine. The Spirit of Existence said I was special, which is why I was able to be resurrected."
"He was able to travel that far and kill you directly." Rong En's face was ashen. "Doesn't that mean he can kill whoever he wants?"
“That thing must have limitations,” Barry said. “If it could be released without limit, we would be dead already.”
"And why Superman?" Diana, who had been to the Battle Realm, raised a question, because she knew that in other universes, the absolute core of the Justice League was Batman. If Darkseid were unified, he should have dealt with Batman first.
Just then, Schiller entered with another person, and everyone looked up. Clark couldn't help but exclaim, "Luther?!"
Lex Luthor nodded calmly to the crowd. Diana looked at Batman and said, "Why did you bring him here?"
“He is important,” Batman replied, “because the most powerful aspect of the Omega Ray is not its offensive power.”
"That……"
"It can resurrect those it has killed."
"What??!!"
Everyone stood up, staring at Batman in disbelief. Batman said, "That's why he chose Superman."
"Because he wants to resurrect Superman?! But... but Superman has already been resurrected..."
“There might be two Supermen,” Batman said. “This is a common programming error. There’s no indication of a single file, and when two build processes run simultaneously, it results in two files instead of one.”
“Good heavens,” Diana exclaimed, “aren’t the programmers a bit too incompetent? Couldn’t God have increased the personnel budget a bit?”
“It’s just a possibility,” Batman said, “but we have to be careful. That’s why I brought in Lex Luthor. He knows best how to deal with Superman.”
Clark's expression was utterly speechless. So, his number one enemy had this effect after all. However, he had to admit that if Batman was telling the truth, and Darkseid was preparing to resurrect another version of himself, then Luthor was truly indispensable.
“You don’t need to worry too much,” Schiller said. “Our initial preparations are sufficient to deal with Darkseid’s little schemes.”
Schiller looked at Diana and said, "Do you remember the Serpent of Frinier?"
Diana closed her eyes and leaned back against the sofa. She said, "Don't tell me you're planning to sell this thing to Darkseid, or that you're planning to put Darkseid under the Pharaoh's curse too?"
"More or less," Schiller said, making a startling statement. "The Serpent of Frini could indeed thwart Darkseid's meticulously prepared resurrection plan."
Everyone looked at him. Schiller asked, "Why do you think he resurrected Superman but not Batman?"
Diana had just thought about this problem. After thinking for a moment, she said, "If he could, he would definitely want to resurrect Batman, but the problem is, he might not be able to control Batman."
"Even if the resurrected person might have some weaknesses that only Darkseid can control, Batman is too versatile. If there is even the slightest mistake, it will be like letting a wolf into the house. Relatively speaking, Superman is easier to control."
"So what method do you think he will use to control Superman?"
"Uh...mind manipulation?"
Ron shook his head and said, "Impossible. Superman's mental strength is extremely strong. Even a race like mine, which specializes in mind control, wouldn't dare say I could control him. Even if Darkseid could control a part of him, it would be extremely difficult and too taxing, let alone long-term control."
Diana thought for a moment. Schiller had just said it was related to the Serpent of Phrygia. Thinking of the Serpent of Phrygia brought to mind the legend of the Pharaoh; thinking of the legend of the Pharaoh brought to mind the scepter that slew the serpent; and thinking of the scepter naturally brought to mind the green gemstone kryptonite.
“Oh, I see,” Diana said with a sudden realization. “Darkseid knew that Kryptonite was Superman’s nemesis. That’s why he resurrected Superman and wanted to use this nemesis to control him.”
“That’s right,” Schiller laughed. “Superman’s weaknesses are too obvious. Anyone who gets their hands on the green stone can hurt or even control him. That’s why Darkseid chose Superman instead of the other members of the Justice League.”
“But…” Diana looked at Clark.
Clark nodded and said, "I'm immune to Kryptonite. If Darkseid were to resurrect an exact replica of me, he wouldn't be able to threaten me with Kryptonite at all."
"That's not all. Because you've fused with magical energy, you're immune to most of the energy in this world, possibly even the energy of the Apocalypse Realm. Magical power is one of the known forces capable of invading the Apocalypse Realm. In other words, you can move freely within the Apocalypse Realm."
"This is going to be quite a show," Diana exclaimed.
“To the serpent of Frini.” Schiller raised his cup.
Even Diana, who was most traumatized and least willing to talk about it, could only raise her glass. "To the Serpent of Frini."
Batman, however, turned around, picked up his glass, and said to Schiller, "To Schiller Rodriguez."
Now the crowd finally showed some sincerity. "Respectfully, Schiller Rodriguez."
