Chapter 4244 Possession by an Evil Spirit (Twenty-Four)
Kate, with a hole punched in her head, stared at the agent in disbelief. She let out another piercing scream, yelling, "Damn it!! How dare you!!!"
"You've been exposed again, haven't you? Get lost." The agent fired two more shots, then said, "If you don't have any new tricks up your sleeve, you don't need to come looking for me. You're just wasting each other's time."
"you……"
"You must be wondering where things went wrong. Well then, I'll let you die knowing why. There are problems everywhere in what you've said. I won't go into the details, but the biggest problem is that your narrative is entirely from a male perspective, something Kate would never say. Moreover, it's a Mormon's view of the world, which is far too narrow."
"You call infertility a 'curse.' I don't deny that not wanting to have children and being unable to have children are two different things, and infertility is indeed a condition worthy of sympathy. However, your words place far too much importance on fertility: being able to have children is success, and not being able to is failure. You've revealed your true colors far too early."
"Furthermore, your descriptions of relationships between men and women are completely unfiltered. I won't discuss with you the question of whether polygamy is reasonable or not, since you wouldn't listen anyway. But your descriptions of the relationship between Aunt Kane and the Elder are clearly biased. You said that Aunt Kane is old and past her prime and can no longer seduce the Elder with her looks, which implies that she actively seduced him, leading to their relationship. Does that mean that Aunt Kane tied the Elder to the bed?"
"Furthermore, you completely ignored what happened to Linda. What do you mean by 'Linda gave birth to the elder's child'? That's rape, do you understand?"
"Finally, you said Binger has the ability to predict the future, including disasters and animal movements. Is it possible that he uses electronic devices and watches the weather forecast, something his 'unconventional' father taught him?"
"As for things like black magic curses, that's utter nonsense. You can just kill someone and pin it on him; how can a three- or four-year-old child possibly defend himself?"
“Throughout this process, you completely concealed the evil deeds committed by the Mormons and desperately tried to draw my attention to that little boy Bing. If I hadn’t interrupted you, were you going to say that he was the evil spirit that was harming the town and then ask me to destroy him?”
"I'll say it again, you've really failed as a ghost. Your only purpose is to provide plot, but the misleading fake plots you concocted are completely illogical, and you haven't served any purpose at all. Alright, get out of here."
The agent waved and walked towards the door, but the evil spirit seemed to have finally lost its temper. It let out a shriek, and the agent saw a cloud of black energy burst out of Kate's body, heading straight for his face.
"Damn it!" the agent cursed. He turned to dodge, but the space was too cramped and the thing was too fast; he couldn't avoid it. Just as he was about to be hit by the black mist, Kate's body suddenly moved again.
“Got you.” Kate’s voice turned unusually cold. The agent instinctively looked up at him, and in the instant their eyes met, Kate’s gaze suddenly sharpened.
The next second, the black energy struck the agent. He lost consciousness. In the real world, Kate sprang to her feet. She grabbed the agent from behind and choked him, driving a sharp spike into his chest.
The agent's body remained still, but suddenly a violent surge of black energy began to erupt around him. The black energy seemed to be struggling, trying to do something, but it failed.
Kate stood behind him, looking at him, then suddenly gave him a cold smile and said, "I've already seen you."
Then, Kate's figure went limp. But the black aura controlling the agent's body struggled frantically, but no matter how hard it struggled, it couldn't break free from the body.
The thorn was completely embedded in his body; he tried to pull it out, but couldn't reach it. He could only stagger away, his figure disappearing into the night.
In Aunt Kane's room, Huntsman sat up in bed, slowly turned his head, and looked in one direction.
When the agent woke up again, he found himself still in the church, but it was still night. He looked up and saw Bruce.
“You’ve finally arrived,” Bruce said. “The other you left not long ago. If you had come earlier, you might have run into him.”
The detective shook his head and said, "I've already run into him. Tell me what happened."
Bruce briefly explained the intelligence they had gathered and what the mental world was all about. The agent sighed softly and said, "This evil spirit is completely wrong."
"What do you mean?" Bruce asked him. The other Schiller had said before that the evil spirit was completely wrong, but he hadn't understood what was wrong with it. Currently, this evil spirit seemed quite powerful, not only able to summon mummies but also possessing such a large spiritual world.
"The worst thing he could have done was to let the hunt into the mental world while leaving me in the real world, allowing us to each enter our own areas of expertise."
The agents now fully understood what the hunter was doing.
If we start from the beginning, it would be something like this: This evil spirit has the ability to pull very weak people into the spiritual world, but this person must be related to the town of Great Valley, either by being in the town or by coming into contact with something related to the town.
While robbing the bank, the agents and hunters found a prop from a circus performance. Something popped out of the prop and stabbed them. Although this seemed like a system punishment, it was also presented through the plot. This was clearly a trap set up by the evil spirit beforehand.
It's clear that this evil spirit doesn't intend to remain in one place; it simply lacks the opportunity to leave the town for some reason. The doll box left in the bank might be one of its trump cards for escape. Once someone touches the box and triggers the mechanism, simultaneously becoming "weakened" and "making contact with Great Valley Town," the evil spirit can then pull them into the spiritual world.
This evil spirit also has another ability: to control the bodies of those souls it pulls into its mental world. For example, Aunt Kane's soul was pulled into the mental world, and even though she was dead, her body could still be controlled by the evil spirit.
So when someone who comes into contact with the doll is pulled in, the evil spirit can go out and use that person's body. And this person isn't in a town, but in a city, or even a large metropolis. In this way, it successfully uses the other person's body to go to the big city.
The evil spirit must have had such a desire, otherwise it wouldn't have chosen to target Peter first. Peter is a police officer in Westville, and once it gets his body, it can establish itself in Westville and gain some power, which will facilitate its future development.
In this situation, the evil spirit's biggest mistake was placing these frightening boxes. Because it was Schiller who stumbled upon them; more accurately, it was the hunter who perfectly triggered the trap.
The Hunter met the evil spirit's requirements: he entered the mental world. However, the Hunter's abilities are more psychic, specifically mental tracking. Once inside, he could find a way to hide himself, and the evil spirit couldn't find him immediately.
The evil spirit must first find the person's soul and make contact with him before it can enter his body. Since it couldn't find its prey, it couldn't enter his body, and so the matter remained unresolved.
But don't forget, the hunter's mental tracking abilities are geared towards offense; his hiding is merely a temporary measure. What he really wants to do is find this evil spirit.
As the hunter said, everyone in the town could be an evil spirit because this evil spirit has actually evolved into the collective consciousness of a certain group of people in the town—or rather, after so much time, it has basically become the collective consciousness of everyone in the town. It is more like an "obsession".
So if he doesn't show himself, then everyone is him, and the hunter's tracking ability becomes ineffective.
Another reason is that he cannot be destroyed in the spiritual world, because this world itself is created by him. The hunter cannot destroy him in the world he created, so the only way is to bring him into the real world and trap him in a body so that he cannot return to the spiritual world, in order to destroy him.
The method to bring him into the real world was simple: let him control someone's body and then encounter the agents.
The hunter knew perfectly well that the agent simply didn't have the patience to listen to any plot or dialogue. He was just letting those conversations go in one ear and out the other; there was no way he could be brainwashed.
However, this evil spirit doesn't seem to like force; it prefers deception and hypnosis. It often uses its ability to control the body, pretends to be an acquaintance, and then gradually lures and hypnotizes the other person into its mental world through words.
The agent wasn't buying it at all. The evil spirit tried to pry into his past and engage him in conversation, but he wouldn't listen. Finally, when his patience wore thin, the body controlled by the evil spirit was shot dead.
The agent is completely immune to the evil spirit's deception. Once he sees through it once, he will never be fooled again. Anyone who tries to chat with him will be shot dead, thus fundamentally preventing the evil spirit from disrupting the real world.
The mistakes mentioned by the agent and the hunter were essentially the same. If he had pulled the agent into the mental world and kept the hunter in reality, there might have been some room for maneuver. But by placing them in their respective areas of expertise, wasn't that a grave error?
Moreover, the detective's approach is infuriating. Judging from the evil spirit's behavior, he's a ghost with some artistic aspirations; otherwise, he wouldn't have resorted to deception instead of force. He's the kind of person who believes his intelligence surpasses others, able to manipulate people's hearts at will, causing them to fall apart.
It's not hard to imagine that he must have done this before. Those tourists from out of town who were pulled into his mental world likely experienced numerous battle royale scenarios in this dead-end town. Any one of their companions could be an evil spirit in disguise, and they sought their own deaths amidst fear and suspicion. This is the pleasure that evil spirits derive from possessing others.
This time, he did the same thing, but he encountered a speedrunner who frantically skipped every dialogue and scene. The fact that the long setup couldn't be skipped was already infuriating, so the agent's methods were bound to be brutal. The evil spirit would be in a situation where "reason is useless against a soldier," which would definitely infuriate it. It's like "I meticulously prepared a grand feast, but what arrived was a wild boar that couldn't even eat the finest chaff."
But these kinds of people don't give up so easily; they're all somewhat obsessive and refuse to believe they can't beat you in this field. So they'll keep trying. If Peter doesn't work, they'll try someone else, and the best choice is Kate, who seems to have become a victim—given that Kate has been kidnapped by an evil spirit, the truth she tells will be very convincing.
However, the agent still managed to shoot him, and the evil spirit completely broke down. It stopped trying to pull people into its mental world and went straight for a physical assault.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, the Hunter sealed him directly inside the agent's body and used his mental tracking ability to lock onto him.
