Chapter 4232 Possession by Evil Spirits (Part Twelve)
The agent skipped all the riddle-solving conversations, so when Linda stormed out the door in a huff, he had no idea what had happened. He considered asking, but figured he'd only get more riddles out of her, so he decided to take action anyway.
He followed behind Linda without being noticed. While this kind of stalking technique isn't exactly a defined ability, the line between them is rather blurry. After all, everyone does stalking; it's just a matter of not being detected, and it doesn't necessarily mean he used any special techniques.
In fact, Linda is currently very emotional, and it would be difficult for the agent to detect her even without any special skills. Therefore, he did not lose any health points.
However, he soon discovered that Linda was heading towards the cemetery. Now he hesitated, not because he was worried about being discovered, but because going to the cemetery was definitely not a good choice given the existence of an evil spirit.
After some thought, the agent followed. After all, it was daytime, and he had visited the cemetery during the day before without triggering any hunting activity. He had also gone with Linda, essentially eliminating all variables. So, he went along.
When they got there, they discovered that Linda had somehow gotten a shovel and was digging a grave.
From a distance, the detectives saw that Linda appeared to be digging up her father's grave. She was very strong, and in no time she had dug the grave open, then took something out, put it in a bag, and started walking back.
After she left, the detective, not daring to linger alone in the cemetery, followed her back to the house. He saw Linda go to the workshop alone and put the item down. However, she remained in the workshop the entire time, and the detective didn't find an opportunity to enter.
He waited patiently until nightfall. He knew Aunt Kane was watching Linda and would never allow her to stay out all night or not sleep. Sure enough, when it got dark, Linda went straight to her room to sleep. The agent then entered the work area.
As soon as he entered, he saw a horrifying scene. The workbench had been cleared out, and now there were many bones on it.
The detective wasn't exactly a novice, but the problem was that these bones were very small, clearly not from an adult, and more like those of a kitten or puppy. However, the shape of the head indicated that they were human bones, likely those of a child.
The detective went over for a closer look and discovered that Linda was trying to put the child's bones back together, but she clearly lacked the knowledge to do so, and the result was not quite human-like.
The agent was very knowledgeable in this area. He immediately sorted the bones and began to slowly assemble them. He usually assembled the other bones of the body first, and then put the skull on top.
Just as he had arranged all the bones and was about to pick up the skull, a memory flashed before his eyes the moment his index finger touched it.
"How is Linda? She cried a lot earlier."
“She’s fine,” a woman said. “It’s her first time having a baby, so it’s understandable that she cried a lot. But she’s a wonderful girl, and both she and her baby are healthy. Look at our little John, he’ll definitely be just as great as his father.”
"How is Berg?"
"Him? He's a coward! Linda giving birth to the elder's child is an honor for our family, but all he does is hide in that workshop, messing around with his broken wood! I've had enough!"
The scene gradually came into focus. The agent realized it appeared to be from the perspective of a baby being held in someone's arms. Someone was softly comforting him, and suddenly a woman's face flashed across their vision—it was Aunt Kane, who looked slightly younger.
The previous statement was packed with information; it took the detective a while to process it all. But then, even more information arrived.
Aunt Kane carried the baby into the workshop, where a man was working at his desk. Seeing her, the man said somewhat hesitantly, "I think, perhaps we should..."
“No. I said, this is Linda’s honor! Besides, the elders wouldn’t agree.”
“I promised him I’d be a missionary for another year, and I’m leaving next month. Don’t register the child under Linda’s name; it will ruin her.”
"You damn bastard! Why can't you understand? This isn't a stain on her reputation, it's her honor!"
"What honor?!" the man finally exploded. "Giving birth to your first child at such a young age, what kind of honor is that?!"
"This is the elder's child!" the woman shrieked. "If I hadn't been injured, how could this little slut have gotten her share?! How dare she refuse the elder's favor! If she weren't my only daughter, I would have beaten her to death long ago!"
The man appeared distressed, saying, "I really don't understand why you did this. I was going to... I was going to..."
"You could have run away? You damn coward! Why do you always try to escape your family?! We're married now, and if you dare to have any other thoughts, not only you, but your daughter will also suffer!"
After saying that, the woman left with the child in her arms. The man watched her departing figure, his vision turning blood red.
After the flashback ended, the agent stood there speechless for a long time. He said he was right to habitually skip the plot; the scene was playing out so fast that by the time he realized what he had heard, it was too late.
He looked down at the baby's skeleton and squeezed his eyes shut. It turned out that the child marked "Berg" in the grave next to Linda's father wasn't Linda's brother, but her son. Linda was under 14 when she gave birth to him, perhaps just reaching reproductive age.
And it seems that Aunt Kane couldn't have children herself, but wanted an elder's child, so she had Linda give birth. It's not hard to imagine that this process was definitely not voluntary.
The detective's head was spinning. No wonder Linda was so hostile towards spawning salmon. After experiencing something like this, no one could possibly have any fondness for the idea of "reproduction."
Now it seems that perhaps it was because Aunt Kane forced her, but she didn't dare to retaliate against Aunt Kane, so she vented her resentment on the salmon. She may have tried to kill the fish before, but Aunt Kane stopped her, and only now, with the arrival of outsiders, has she been able to fulfill her wish.
It is now certain that this is a cult. This is because Linda's father mentioned terms like "missionary."
Furthermore, from his few words, it can be inferred that her father was actually unwilling to do this, but was powerless to resist. He may have even tried to escape before, but was caught and brought back.
But strangely, Linda's father was a local, while Aunt Kane was an outsider. How could the local want to leave, while the outsider was so steadfast in their faith?
The agent instinctively felt it was related to the "elder." It was highly likely that after their marriage, the elder brainwashed Aunt Kane, leading to this incident.
However, since this child was the elder's child and Aunt Kane valued him highly, how could he have died at the age of four? And how did Linda's father die?
Although they had found clues, they also had more mysteries. The detective pondered for a moment and quickly came up with a direction for the investigation.
We mustn't alarm Aunt Kane yet, because no matter what, someone who forces her own daughter to do such a thing can't be a good person. She definitely has a deep connection with that evil spirit, and investigating her rashly could very well lead to danger.
Linda has already laid the groundwork. Although we don't know exactly what she's up to, it's most likely revenge against those who treated her badly before. This could certainly cause some trouble for the evil spirit, but if she gets possessed by it, the agents shouldn't get too close.
That leaves only two directions for the investigation: Linda's father and Linda's son. Both are now dead and pose no danger of resurrection, making the investigation relatively straightforward.
The child died at the age of four, so there probably won't be much to find. But Linda's father lived for so long and was a local, so he should have left some traces. For one thing, this workshop was left by her father; there should still be some clues left.
The detective searched the workshop. It was a mess, and it was hard to find anything useful. He started rummaging through the things at the bottom; the more dusty they were, the older they were, and the more likely they were left by Linda's father.
First, move the boxes outside, then there's the rain shelter, and inside there are two more shelves. Go around these two shelves, and at the very back there's a box that looks somewhat familiar.
The detective suddenly realized that this box, like the one in the circus warehouse, had a dark, slightly old exterior, looking like something from the last century.
He first took the gun, and then found something to pry open the box. However, there was no corpse inside, but a bunch of random things, which all looked like handmade props.
The detectives rummaged through the items and found a tattered clown costume, then they found something familiar: the scare box they had discovered in the bank vault.
“So that’s where it came from,” the agent murmured. However, the scare box he found in the box was unfinished; the paint and everything else were done, but the scare doll wasn’t inside. Upon inspection, the agent determined it wasn’t a manufactured product. Remembering that Linda’s father was a carpenter, the agent figured it must have been made by him.
Scrolling down, they came across a small wooden horse. The moment the detective's fingers touched the wooden horse, another memory surfaced.
"Little Zida, look at this! Daddy made it for you, do you like it?"
"I love it! This is so cool! I have my own horse now! I'm going to be a cowboy! Woohoo!!"
"So you want to be a cowboy. How about Dad buys you a real horse someday?"
"Okay! I want to ride a horse to the sea! Dad, have you ever seen the sea?"
"Of course, I've seen it before when I went on tour. I've even swum in the sea. There are great white sharks and squid in the sea..."
"That's awesome! I want to swim in the sea someday! But didn't you say the circus was going out of business?"
"Yes, the circus isn't doing well and it'll probably have to close down. But that's alright. You'll be going out to preach eventually, so you can go again then."
"What is missionary work, Dad?"
"It's about spreading the Lord's gospel so that everyone can have a happy family life. You'll understand when you grow up."
The detective saw a handsome blue-eyed man holding a wooden pony, waving it back and forth in front of its owner. This handsome man called his son "Zida," the exact same name as Linda's father.
In other words, this handsome blue-eyed man is Linda's grandfather. However, he mentioned a circus tour in his speech; could he also be a circus performer?
