Chapter 3743 The Perilous Situation in Dark City (Part Six)
Schiller jumped to the rooftop on the right and descended the stairs of the building to the ground. He had his sights set on a squad of samurai.
If Batman wanted to set a trap in the cathedral, he could simply contact the Angel of Death. But the fact that the Samurai Squad is also moving in this direction proves that he has contacted Ms. Shiva as well.
Even if he wanted to get rid of Tone as soon as possible and save his own life, there was no need for both sides to send people to pick him up. After all, Tone was just an ordinary person, and his legs and arms were injured; there was no need to make a big fuss over him.
So, the reason the samurai team is here is very likely because Batman is eager to retrieve the nanotech equipment.
They've most likely already realized that Schiller isn't Batman. To be precise, he's not a good guy. Moral blackmail and psychological manipulation have no effect on him. So there's no need for any more "personally rescuing the Destroyer" drama, and certainly no need to give the nanotech equipment to Schiller and then have him rescue Batman. Batman can simply retrieve the equipment himself.
Therefore, Schiller deduced that these samurai squads were delivering equipment to Batman. And his target was the nanotech equipment in Ms. Shiva's possession.
A samurai squad typically consists of 3 to 5 people. The one Schiller was targeting had only three members. Their attire was clearly different from that of the cult members, making them easily identifiable even in the dimly lit city.
Schiller lay in ambush at the street corner. The instant they turned the corner, Schiller fired five shots with his silenced pistol. All three men fell. The dull thuds didn't travel far and didn't alert the surrounding cult members.
Schiller quickly searched them but didn't find the lantern-like device with nanotech gear from the comics. He then turned and headed towards the second squad.
He didn't have many bullets, so he had to use them sparingly. This time he only fired one shot, taking down the leader. He dealt with the remaining two with his fist blades; neither of them had any left.
Schiller walked into a secluded alley and began to think. Just then, he saw a figure in a purple hoodie flash past the street corner—it was Ms. Shiva.
Schiller hesitated for a moment, then refrained from immediately attacking. He circled around to the other side of the alley and happened to see two cult members patrolling out of the building. This time, he didn't use a gun. Instead, he slipped out from behind them, grabbed one of them by the neck, and stabbed him in the back. Before the other could react, Schiller punched him in the eye socket, knocking him back, and then kicked him in the stomach. After knocking him down, he plunged his fist into his throat.
Then, he stripped the red robe of the cult member he had stabbed to death and put it on. The robe had a hood, which he put on. Because the city was so dimly lit, the hood completely blocked his view.
Schiller first dragged the two corpses into the stairwell, then pretended to have finished his patrol and walked out of the stairwell, carrying a torch towards Lady Shiva. Without changing his expression, he went around the street corner where she appeared and saw Lady Shiva standing between two knights, talking to each other.
Neither of the knights glanced at him. This confirmed Schiller's earlier suspicion: they were all in cahoots, and the so-called fight was all an act.
That's how Schiller was able to approach them. He kept his head down and walked quickly past them. Just as he got closest to them, he pulled out the pistol from his pocket.
boom! boom! boom!
Because the distance was so close, both warriors were shot in the head. Ms. Shiva was shot in the lung, and blood instantly rushed into her trachea. Taking advantage of her suffocation, Schiller punched her in the face. After knocking her down, he snatched the "lantern" containing nanotechnology from her hand.
After grabbing the items, Schiller immediately turned and left, making sure no one saw his face. He knew that the shot wouldn't be fatal to Madam Shiva, but it could deal a devastating blow to the cooperative relationship between the League of Assassins and the Order of the Saints.
Schiller quickly left with the nanotech equipment, returning to the building where Batman was. He saw members of the Cult carrying some kind of device enter.
The Order members quickly led Batman and Toni away from the building, and the others had no intention of lingering there. Schiller seized the opportunity when things were out of the way and entered the building, returning to the room where Batman had been.
The room was somewhat messy. The exact details weren't clear, but Schiller knew Tone had likely attacked Batman. He probably intended to kill Batman, but failed in his first strike and was instead charmed by Batman's sweet talk, ultimately dragging the situation until members of the Order arrived and took both of them away.
Judging from the marks, Tone intended to smash the glass jar behind Batman's head. But unsurprisingly, it was quite sturdy—a stool couldn't break it.
Schiller began to ponder what Batman had used to persuade Tone—this was crucial. If the Nano Batman had killed Tone, ordinary conditions wouldn't suffice. It had to be a critical, decisive condition.
In the original storyline, Toni is Bane's son and witnessed the Angel of Death, Paul, kill his father. This is why he tries to save Batman, wanting Batman to kill the Angel of Death. Perhaps Batman agreed to help him get revenge?
But Toni, who has already been killed by the Nano Batman, won't trust Batman so easily. Unless... Batman promises to give him the nanotech equipment.
Perhaps that's why Ms. Shiva made the trip herself. After all, Tone is Bane's son, and an ordinary samurai might not be able to subdue him in a single encounter. If Tone were to actually steal the nanotech equipment, Batman would be devastated.
But now, Ms. Shiva has been shot down by his own hand, and he has stolen the nanotech equipment. Only members of the Order have gone. Batman's plan to use the nanotech equipment as bait to keep Tony occupied until Ms. Shiva arrives and then subdue her has essentially failed.
The Order members were likely no match for Tone, and Batman, with only his head remaining and being held by Tone, was a completely defenseless hostage. In this situation, he could only continue to stall, perhaps by having Tone accompany him to retrieve equipment somewhere.
After surveying the room, Schiller began examining the nanotech equipment in his hands. He opened the lid of the "lantern." Almost instantly, something completely invisible crawled up his arm.
He could feel a very faint, cool sensation, like a cold wind blowing across him. Immediately afterwards, he felt something clinging to his skin, but it was invisible to the naked eye.
Schiller had a hunch. He took out his dagger and made a small cut on his finger. Before the blood even seeped out, the wound had already healed. This must be the magic of nanotechnology.
Furthermore, the hunger he had felt due to the prolonged lack of food and water vanished instantly. His body quickly returned to peak condition. This made Schiller feel quite good.
Without much hesitation, Schiller chased after the cult members in the direction they had gone as fast as he could. He found that his steps were lighter, his speed had increased significantly, he had gained night vision, and all his senses had been further enhanced.
Therefore, he could easily see the tracks on the ground. After all, Tone had injured one leg, and his gait was peculiar, leaving very noticeable tracks. Following these tracks, Schiller approached the cathedral and turned into a small alley not far from it.
There was a government building here, but the upper five floors were missing. Schiller heard noises inside. He climbed up to the second floor using the drainpipe on the exterior wall. In an office on this side, he saw Torney strapped to his seat, and the Angel of Death submerging Batman's spine in a nutrient solution tank.
Schiller charged straight in and unleashed a barrage of fire at the tallest figure in the room—the Angel of Death. He didn't care about the bullets; he emptied his magazine as soon as he saw the Angel of Death, and at least seven or eight bullets pierced the Angel of Death's body.
The man whirled around as if possessed. Schiller, however, paid no heed to his roar. Using his speed advantage, he thrust his double-edged fist blade upwards into the man's jaw. The sharp blade plunged straight into his brain. The Angel of Death twitched twice and then went still.
Instead of looking at the Angel of Death lying on the ground, Schiller took Batman out of the nutrient solution tank, grabbed his spine, and started slamming him to the ground.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Schiller's original power, combined with the enhancement of the nano-equipment, required five strikes to break the glass jar open.
"No...no!!!" Batman screamed in despair, "You can't do this to me!! Otherwise you'll never be able to complete the mission!!!"
Schiller ignored him and didn't ask how he knew about the "mission." He plunged his fist into the opening of the glass jar and twisted it violently. Batman's "genius brain" shattered completely. Schiller released his grip and threw the head to the ground. Brain matter and fragments poured out like a mudslide.
Bound, Tone stared at Schiller with terrified eyes. Schiller walked over, fist blade in hand, and said, "Don't look at me like that. I know you're not innocent either. Goodbye."
Schiller waved his hand, and Toni's trachea was cut open; he quickly went silent. He checked the interface and, as expected, the mission hadn't failed.
Upon learning that they were all in cahoots, Schiller changed his plan: if everyone could be Batman, then he had to save everyone. Conversely, if he killed everyone, then none of them could be Batman.
"Broken Bat" doesn't live up to Batman's potential, nor does Paul Walker, the Angel of Death, and Toni is clearly too inexperienced. These three only have the potential to become Batman, but turning that potential into reality takes time.
None of these three currently meet Batman's requirements. For them to become Batman, either Broken Batman must reform, Death Angel must turn over a new leaf, or Tony must inherit the mantle—some kind of transformation is necessary. But if they are all killed before they change, then these three will never become Batman.
Schiller's guess was correct. The mission didn't fail outright, meaning none of these three can currently be considered the true Batman. A future Batman might emerge from among these three, but since they are now dead, they are all excluded from the race.
Schiller closed the mission interface just as a pale-faced Ms. Shiva rushed in. The dark-haired woman stared in disbelief at the blood, brain matter, and corpses in the room.
"You...you killed them all?!"
In that instant of shock, Schiller had already closed in. Ms. Shiva, true to her martial arts prowess, instantly ducked to dodge Schiller's strike. A flash of cold light appeared on her fist, and a strand of black hair fell. She flipped backward, creating distance between herself and Schiller.
"Damn it!" she said, as if she had realized something. "So it was you who stole the nanotech equipment!"
Just as Schiller reached for his gun, a cold glint flashed in Ms. Shiva's eyes, and her fingertips lightly traced the surface of her right-hand watch. Schiller froze instantly.
"Ha!" The woman, as venomous as a snake, let out a cold laugh. "Only I can control nanotech. You've been fooled!"
Immediately afterwards, tiny particles began to fly towards Ms. Shiva. Not only were the nanofactors detaching, but the nanobots leaving her body were also taking away Schiller's flesh and blood. The arm that had come into contact with the nanobots, and even half of her body, began to reveal bare bones.
The next second, Ms. Shiva's vision spun. She felt as if she had been hit by a train and thrown into the air. Before she completely lost consciousness, she saw a contemptuous smile in the eyes of Schiller's still intact half of his face.
"Greed and arrogance, time to get to work!"
After saying that, he slowly collapsed as if his consciousness had left his body.
