Chapter 3408 Son of Midnight (VII)
In the Avengers' base, a cup of coffee was placed on the table. The sound of the bottom of the cup touching the table woke Stark up. Steve waved his hand in front of his eyes and said, "You've been in a daze for half an hour, don't you want to have a shot?"
Peter, who was standing next to him, rubbed the top of his pool cue, pushed up his glasses and said, "Didn't the doctor say it would be fine? Why are you so nervous?"
"Aren't you worried?" Stark pretended to come to his senses, put one leg over the other, looked to one side, and then said, "For example, he suddenly appeared here, but didn't recognize us at all. Or he rushed in like a madman and wanted to kill everyone."
Peter pulled his head back, almost showing a double chin, and his features wrinkled together, as if he couldn't understand why Stark had such an idea. He continued to rub the pool cue, and then said, "Why is this happening? What do you think caused this to happen?"
"Just some accidents."
"Then why don't you feel like your computer won't boot up anymore when you update it? Or that a dinosaur pops out of the screen and eats you?"
"Because the program is stable." Stark spread his hands and said, "Every line of code in the computer system is logical. If there is no problem with the logic, there will be no accidents."
"Isn't that the same with Dr. Schiller?"
"Do you think he is like this?"
Peter nodded and said, "You should make this assumption. For ordinary people like us, there is always an illogical side in our spiritual world, full of all kinds of coincidences, like an unknown black box whose structure you don't know unless you open it."
"But this is not the case with Dr. Schiller. He can keep his mental system running in such a bizarre way, which proves that there must not be many coincidences. Otherwise, if accidents happen every day, this mode of operation cannot be maintained at all."
"So his spiritual world is more logical than that of an ordinary person, just like a carefully designed computer system. The screen won't go black randomly, and it's even more impossible for any strange thing to break the laws of physics and rush out of the screen to hit you."
Stark was silent and thinking. Steve walked back to the pool table, shook his head and said, "Even if he suddenly goes crazy, can't you restrain him? Schiller without reason can't be more difficult to deal with than Schiller with reason."
This is to the point. Stark suddenly came to his senses. He stood up quickly, picked up the pool cue, pushed Peter aside, and hit the cue ball.
"If he's broken, we'll fix him." Stark watched with satisfaction as the yellow ball rushed to the middle pocket, rubbing the pool cue quickly, and then said, "I can fix everything. Of course."
Footsteps sounded outside the door. Stark's hair stood up. Like a wary badger, he turned his head and looked towards the door.
The red-haired female agent pushed the door open and came in. Stark swayed like a deflated balloon and held onto the edge of the pool table.
Natasha was a little confused. She looked at Stark and said, "What's wrong with you?"
Then she seemed to have misunderstood something, licked her lips and said, "Okay, Tony. I admit that some of my words may have been a bit harsh before. Even if you are not a good bed partner, we are still good friends. I definitely don't mean to forget my friends for the sake of beauty..."
Steve sighed softly, looked at Natasha and said, "If he could pay half of his attention to you now, all our problems would be solved."
"What's going on?" The female agent stretched her neck forward, showing some curiosity.
"Dr. Schiller is going to do a system update," Peter said, holding the pool cue under his elbow. "He's been like this since he got the news."
"Update the system. What system? Oh, his own system." Natasha tidied her hair and said, "Why is it updating all of a sudden?"
"Version optimization." Peter summarized, "Cancel the design of fixed character skills and put all the skills of all characters into a universal pool. Characters can choose their own skill combinations. At the same time, there is a certain probability of obtaining the negative attributes of the character corresponding to the skill."
"You can't make this sound like a crappy web game!" Stark yelled. "It's not that simple!"
"It's that simple, Tony. Can you calm down for a moment?"
Stark threw his head back and let out a scream. Natasha propped one hand on the edge of the pool table and said, "It seems that we should hire another psychiatrist for SHIELD to coax a certain childish baby when Schiller is absent."
"He also took a leave of absence from SHIELD?"
"Yes. That's what I wanted to say." Natasha took out her cell phone and looked at it while saying, "Nick said he took a month off. It seems that he wants to experience the life of a street hero. The Avengers have to keep a close eye on New York recently to prevent any trouble."
"I will." Steve aimed at the cue ball and shot, then said, "The news of the completion of the starship has made those snakes, insects, rats and ants hiding in the dark corners completely restless. They seem to want to have one last carnival."
"Miles has grown a lot and is now a qualified Spider-Man. I feel relieved to have him around." Peter glanced at his watch and said, "I still have to go to Eddie to adjust the optical parameters for the Starship live broadcast. You guys can play first."
Natasha smiled as she saw him off, saying, "Our street kid has grown up to be a great scientist."
Peter smiled at her, no longer as immature and flustered as before. Natasha watched him leave and slowly closed the door.
"How does the game end?" Steve asked.
"Don't mention it." Natasha walked to the sofa and sat down. She picked up the coffee that Stark hadn't even touched, took a sip and said, "The war still broke out. The two sides fought fiercely. We withdrew after completing the mission, and on the way to escape, we met Star-Lord who had just entered the game."
“What label did he choose?”
"War, but he probably thought it was an interstellar war. Turns out it was a medieval magic fight. You have no idea how funny his expression was." Natasha laughed to herself.
"Who is he teamed with?"
"Gamora."
Steve raised an eyebrow at Natasha and said, "Are there any chances for these two?"
"It looks interesting." Natasha thought for a moment and said, "But it's too difficult to actually get together. By the way, Agent Carter is back to work today. Do you want to go and take a look?"
"Let's go together." Steve glanced at Stark and said, "You haven't been to SHIELD for several years, right?"
"I don't want to go." Stark stared at the billiard ball on the table.
"Please, don't do this." Natasha walked over and slapped Stark on the back. Stark screamed and turned to glare at Natasha.
Natasha made a zipper gesture with her hand next to her lips and said, "If you want me to shut up in front of Pepper, you'd better keep an eye on me all the time."
"I don't have time to discuss this with you right now." Stark said this, but he still threw the pool cue aside and followed Steve out.
They took the shuttle and rushed to the headquarters of SHIELD in New York. Since Nick took over the Time Management Bureau, the office location of SHIELD agents has been changed back to the ground. The aerospace carrier is used to handle the affairs of the Time Management Bureau.
Steve and his group saw Coulson as soon as they walked in. Stark was stunned when he took one look at him, put one hand in the pocket of his suit, looked around him, and looked him up and down.
"Man, are you getting younger?"
After shaking hands with Steve, Coulson turned around and said, "You're not mistaken, Tony. I've really gotten younger."
"I didn't realize you were the type to get cosmetic surgery."
"Of course I'm not. I just ate the golden apple." Coulson shrugged and said, "Come here. Nick is waiting for you."
"Golden Apple?" Stark thought he was telling some new kind of cold joke and didn't take it seriously.
The group walked through the office area and came to the door of Nick's office, where they ran into Carter who was walking out with documents.
Natasha winked at Steve, and just as Steve was about to walk over, Carter gave him a warning look. Steve had no choice but to follow her and leave.
"What happened to them?" Stark asked.
"Agent Carter doesn't like to interact with others during working hours and is very dedicated." Natasha pushed the door open.
Coulson followed Stark and said, "You've been in the lab so long that you've become a bit of a caveman now."
Stark wanted to retort, but he couldn't think of any words, so he turned around and glared at Coulson.
Unexpectedly, Nick was not the only one in his office. A blonde in uniform was standing in the corner, and the whole office was in a mess, as if it had just been through a storm.
Natasha was also stunned. But Coulson was not surprised. He walked behind Nick's desk and... took out a kitten?
"Wait, this can't be..." Natasha said, pointing at the kitten.
"This is Gugu's baby." The blonde woman walked over, held the kitten in her arms, stroked its fur, and said, "Gugu gave birth to six kittens, and this is the youngest one."
"Who is Gugu?" Stark asked in surprise.
Nick pulled a ginger cat from behind the table—something on the borderline between a cat and a pig—and placed it on the table with a thump. Nick sighed and said, “It’s Gugu.”
Stark walked over, scratched the orange cat's chin, and said, "Just a few kittens can make you like this?"
"Kitten?" Nick picked up the orange cat and pointed it at Stark. Stark didn't know what he was going to do and just stood there in a daze.
Coulson was prepared. The moment a large group of tentacles burst out of the orange cat's mouth, he pulled Stark away.
Nick grinned and said, "Come on, Coulson. Being swallowed by the goblin is nothing. At most you'll spend a week in jail."
"Boss, it just gave birth and is still very weak. If you eat too much, you will get a stomachache." Coulson said helplessly.
"What the hell!" Stark took a few steps back, staring at the cat in shock.
"Gugu is a meta-devourer. It's a monster that looks like a cat but can actually swallow everything into another dimension." The blonde girl next to him explained, "A few kittens were born recently, and I'm here to adopt one."
"You want to find an adoptive family for this thing on Earth?" Natasha hesitated.
The blonde woman nodded and said, "In fact, only the Earth is safe for them, because the Devourers are very rare in the universe. Most species will just kill them. A small number of them will be sold on the black market if they are caught. I don't feel comfortable letting them wander around in the universe."
"Did you ever wonder why they wanted to kill this thing?" Stark asked.
“Most races find it dangerous.”
“It’s actually pretty dangerous.”
"It's not that exaggerated." The blonde woman shook her head and said, "For you superheroes, it's not a big deal. That's why I asked Nick to help me find an adoption."
"Don't worry, Carol, I will find a good home for these little guys." Nick touched the orange cat's head.
