Chapter 151: The demon’s full body
Then, the silence was broken by another loud laugh from the shadow face.
The cackle erupted from the gaping, fang-filled maw with a violent, grinding intensity that shook the structural brickwork of the multi-storey warehouses far above their heads.
It was a mocking, grating sound that carried a total absence of fear, thoroughly dispelling any illusion that the entity felt cornered by the presence of an arch magus.
"You sure have a lot of guts don’t you, asking for my master like that," the shadow face hissed, its smoky jaw undulating smoothly as the syllables vibrated directly inside the skulls of the adventurers.
The violet arcs of static electricity crackling around its razor-sharp teeth flared with a sudden, aggressive velocity, casting long, jagged shadows across the carpet of human bones and shattered skulls that littered the floor blocks.
Noah scoffed, a faint, derogatory sound slipping from beneath his mask, but he didn’t respond.
He maintained his frozen, commanding posture, his arms remaining folded loosely.
The strange face leaned forward slightly, the thick mass of dense, hovering shadow trailing behind it like an ink-black cloak as its burning violet gaze dropped down toward the floor tiles.
It stared intently at the mana dome covering Noah and the two other adventurers, analyzing the brilliant, high-density neutral energy that insulated the party from the chamber’s conceptual blindness.
"That mana..." the face muttered, its mocking tone suddenly dropping into a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated with a sudden spike of profound, historical realization.
The smoky features twisted into an expression of intense, sharp calculation. "...I knew it. You’re the one that broke Tara from my connection aren’t you?"
The words cut through the putrid air of the vault like an iron blade, forcing a silent jolt of adrenaline through Yuan’s posture.
"Never before had I expected that such was possible..." the shadow face continued, its eyes contracting into tight, focused pinpricks as it stared at Noah’s black cat disguise with an increasing sense of wonder.
The fluid smoke making up its brow furrowed in a display of genuine, clinical perplexity. "...just who the hell are you? A rogue caster from the another continent? An ancient core that refused to register with the capital? No ordinary magus possesses the power to sever a shadow binding."
Noah remained as silent as a grave, his facial features completely static, refusing to grant the entity a single shred of confirmation or data that could be carried back to its supreme director.
Seeing the arch magus’s absolute, unyielding silence, the shadow face’s expression shifted once more, the violent crackle of its static electricity smoothing out into a deceptive, inviting purr. The gaping maw curved upward into a grotesque, fluid approximation of a welcoming smile.
"Why not come with me..." the face suggested, its grinding baritone echoing through the dark corners of the repository with a smooth, manipulative charm.
The surrounding black fog bubbled lazily, as if offering a path through the void. "...I’m sure my lord will be pleased to have you by his side. A man of your caliber, an asset capable of manipulating neutral frequencies with such absolute dominance... it’ll be the greatest—"
"Never," Noah said, cutting the creature off with a single, razor-sharp syllable that sliced through the manipulative pitch like a physical blade.
He clicked his tongue in deep irritation, a sudden wave of genuine, internal annoyance bubbling through his thoughts and fracturing the cold margin of his acted persona.
He shifted his weight, his boots pressing heavily into the damp stone floor as he looked at the floating entity with an expression of pure, unadulterated disdain.
"Why do all of you seem to want me on their side..." he muttered to himself.
"If you think I’ll join a group of bastards who use children for experiments..." Noah continued, radiating a pressure that made Yuan and Varis step back instinctively. "...then you’re wrong.."
The strange face scoffed, its smoky features tightening as the welcoming smile vanished into a dark, volatile snarl of pure resentment.
The surrounding shadow shroud surged forward, pressing against the golden dome.
"Ho..." the creature whispered, the single syllable carrying a freezing, ominous weight that signaled the absolute end of negotiations.
The dark smoke around it billowed violently, stirring below its head like a localized maelstrom of condensed elemental corruption.
The lazy, bubbling movement of the weaponized shroud vanished, replaced by a fierce, churning momentum that dragged the loose fragments of human bones and shattered skulls across the stone floor blocks, creating a rhythmic, scraping clatter that echoed off the damp brickwork.
As the maelstrom intensified, the chaotic fog began to follow a precise, highly structured geometric command.
Noah kept his arms folded loosely beneath his traveling cloak, his eyes narrowed behind the sharp slits of his matte-black cat mask as he watched the smoke rapidly forming into a tall, slender frame, as well as a neck which connected it to the head.
The fluid, shapeless mass of dark energy was systematically condensing, establishing a rigid physical architecture where there had previously been nothing but an amorphous cloud of ink.
The shoulders broadened into narrow, elegant lines, the torso elongated with an eerie, insectoid grace, and the long limbs stretched downward toward the floor tiles, weaving together dense fibers of dark mana until a complete, imposing biological silhouette stood towering over the small circle of Noah’s protective canopy.
There was a little explosion of smoke around him that sent a small shockwave traveling across the room, causing the outer boundary lines of Noah’s golden dome to hiss violently, and then most of the dark smoke in the room vanished.
For the first time since they had materialized inside the space, the true physical boundaries of the underground facility were fully exposed under the fading light.
Taking their place was a tall creature with pale skin, and three horns on their heads.
The entity stood well over seven feet tall, its physical presence radiating a cold, ancient authority that made the air inside the chamber feel completely unbreathable.
Its skin was an unnatural, porcelain white—a dead, bloodless hue that looked entirely devoid of any circulatory system or living warmth, contrasting sharply with the dark stains splattered across the stone foundations.
