Chapter 3801 The School Doctor's "Daily Life" (Sixteen)
After bandaging Arkham Batman's wounds, Schiller went back to his office. Although he still had more than half of the script to memorize, he nervously played on his phone, chatting and exchanging memes with the directing team in a group chat.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the office door. Schiller, without looking up, called out, "Come in."
He looked up and saw it was Arkham Batman. This guy walked silently and moved incredibly fast. The moment he entered, he somehow darted next to Schiller and even caught a glimpse of his phone screen.
Are you chatting?
Schiller nodded, not feeling offended at all. After all, the group chat was mostly just emojis and memes; there wasn't much important information in it.
"I thought your universe didn't have the internet."
“There isn’t one in the school,” Schiller said. “The internet in our universe is quite advanced; some cities are already connected to the interstellar internet. That’s why we strictly limit the amount of time minors spend online to prevent them from being influenced by harmful information. Even though some students are adults, the Master Supreme believes that too much internet content might interfere with their studies, so there’s no internet connection in the school. I’m currently using the faculty’s intranet.”
“I see.” Arkham Batman nodded and said, “By the way, have you found your lost mirror?”
"You came here just to ask this?"
"After all, it's quite suspicious for something to go missing from the school hospital, isn't it?"
Schiller knew immediately that this was Batman's detective tendencies acting up. He thought for a moment and said, "How about this, if you can help me find the mirror, I can give you some reward. What do you want?"
“I don’t have that ability,” said Batman Arkham. “Anyone who can steal from a magic academy isn’t an ordinary person. Even if I could find him, I might not be able to beat him. I’d better not cause trouble for myself.”
"I thought you guys liked to cause trouble for yourselves," Schiller said with a smile. "How's the wound? Does it still hurt?"
“That’s why I’m here,” Arkham Batman said. “You bandaged me a little too tightly; my arm feels a bit numb. Could you adjust the bandage a bit?”
Schiller quickly went over to check and found that he was indeed wrapped a bit too tightly, so he had to take him back to the ward and take out a new bandage from the preparation room to re-wrap him.
"I heard in class that you have a magic defense network here, it sounds really good. Could you tell me more about it?"
Schiller immediately perked up, saying, "You have a good eye. This is our universe's flagship product. We brought so many people from other universes here just to promote this. Wait a moment, I'll get you the product brochure..."
Schiller rummaged through his office drawer, then handed the product brochure that Strange had given him to Arkham Batman, saying, "There are some books in the library that explain the specific principles; their numbers are written on the brochure. If you're interested, you can take a look, or you can talk to the Sorcerer Supreme. He'd be happy to explain it to you."
Schiller wasn't lying. While Strange didn't particularly like Batman, he wouldn't let personal feelings interfere with public duty. They brought so many people to their universe not only to unite them, but also to promote the magical defense network. Besides collecting technology and energy fees, improving the security of their ally Earth and the overall strength of humanity was also crucial. Therefore, even if the initial profits weren't substantial, he was happy to help.
“I’ll go to the library,” said Arkham Batman.
They chatted for a while longer, mainly about the magical defense network. Schiller tried his best to explain the basic principles, but Schiller himself didn't quite understand. Or rather, Batman absorbed knowledge too quickly; Schiller's limited understanding wouldn't even last an hour before Batman's questions left him speechless.
By the time Arkham Batman felt his injuries had healed, the morning was almost over. He had perfectly accomplished his goal of stalling for time. Before lunch, he went back to his dorm to meet with the main universe Batman.
"How about it?"
“Almost there.” The main universe Batman turned one of the mirrors around. The Arkham Batman saw some runes engraved on the back, all taught in rune class—basic runes for channeling magic to a certain place to produce some simple change.
Batman took out his wand and channeled magic into the runes. Soon, numbers and strange runes appeared on the mirror. After studying them for a while, the Arkham Batman told the main universe Batman what he had heard from Schiller that day.
"You mean this school is connected to a magic defense network?" the main universe Batman suddenly asked.
"It's hard to say, but if it's connected, there should be some kind of energy node. Perhaps we can modify the other mirror to turn it into an energy detector. Where the energy level is high, that's where the node is."
"Let's go to the library first and look for books on the principles of magic defense networks. I've seen several before, and I think they would be helpful for our current research."
Arkham Batman didn't refuse, and he even called Great Adventure Batman along. After hearing their plan, Great Adventure Batman said, "So you guys want to secretly connect to the outside internet and then investigate the magic defense network?"
"It's actually the same thing," said the main universe Batman. "Setting up private internet connections probably requires knowledge of magical defense networks. Once we learn the techniques for setting up private internet connections using magic, we'll probably have a deeper understanding of magical defense networks as well."
“We need to get away from the Sorcerer Supreme first,” said Batman the Adventurer. “While he’d be happy to let us learn about the magical defense network, he definitely won’t allow us to set up our own internet connections. You guys aren’t planning on doing experiments in your dorms, are you?”
“Of course not, we need to find a secret base,” said Batman Arkham.
"It's not that simple. The entire school is under the Sorcerer Supreme's surveillance. You think you can cause trouble right under his nose?"
"I'm not so sure," the main universe Batman said. The adventure Batman was somewhat puzzled, but the main universe Batman simply lowered his voice and said, "I'll take you somewhere tonight."
The three Batmen spent their lunch break at the library reading. While looking at books about magical defense networks, they finally regained some confidence because the content finally seemed more scientific—to be precise, it was systematic and traceable, rather than like children's books or fairy tales.
“I’m increasingly convinced that there’s something wrong with that encyclopedia,” Arkham Batman said. “It’s a completely different matter.”
The book he held was incredibly thick, a jumble of English, Latin, and runes, its contents convoluted and difficult to decipher—the kind of massive tome that would make anyone's head spin just by glancing at it. Yet, Arkham Batman gave it a very high rating.
"What classes do you have this afternoon?" the main universe Batman asked without looking up.
"History and theory of magic, as well as the cosmology taught by Lucifer."
"I'm planning to skip class, what about you guys?"
Batman from Arkham and Batman from Great Adventure exchanged a glance.
“Then I won’t go either,” said Batman the Adventurer. “I have the utmost respect for our dear Lady Hippo, but I really have absolutely no interest in the scum of the gods. And what the hell is cosmology?”
“It’s even more like a book from heaven,” said Batman Arkham. “It’s about how God created the world.”
What are his opinions on the Book of Genesis in the Bible?
"It's not the kind of creation depicted in the Bible, but the real principles of forging a universe. It seems he really wants to teach us how to create the world like God."
"You're not interested?"
"When do you think I'd need this kind of knowledge?" Arkham Batman retorted. "Do you think I'll go to heaven after I die?"
"Unless God also enjoys crushing people's spines with the Batmobile." The Adventurer Batman grinned and showed his teeth.
So the three of them skipped their afternoon class. However, this afternoon's class was combined with Saturn Academy, and only one Lego Batman was assigned to Saturn Academy. The others weren't very familiar with the Batmen and didn't care whether Batman came to class or not.
The absence of the other Batmen was actually a good thing for Lego Batman, as he felt no one would steal his thunder. However, the truth was, the afternoon classes were so boring that he had no desire to stand out. He could fall asleep three times in the time it took Lucifer to say a single sentence.
The other students, however, preferred this kind of class because meditation and studying runes were tiring, but sitting there listening to stories required little effort. If they didn't want to listen anymore, they could close their eyes and catch up on sleep. Because everyone was distracted, no one noticed if anyone was missing.
The two professors seemed to have noticed that some students were missing, but because of the fight that had occurred that morning, they assumed the missing students had gone to the school clinic and didn't pursue the matter further.
And so, the three Batmen successfully skipped an afternoon of class, spending all their time studying the principles of the magical defense network. Batmen's learning abilities are truly remarkable; an afternoon of focused study was enough for them to absorb a significant portion of the knowledge from those voluminous books.
When dinner time came, they didn't go to eat. Batman went to a restaurant and got some food to go. After returning, they quickly finished their meal, and the three of them, as if their butts were nailed to the library benches, continued their research until late at night.
The library never closes and is always brightly lit. No one checks dorm rooms, so their actions went unnoticed by anyone.
Late at night, the main universe Batman and the Arkham Batman retrieved the colorful books from some hidden corner, activated the mechanism, and entered the secret room behind the registration counter.
“I just looked at it. That secret chamber is just a very simple piston mechanism, which can be activated using a special magical energy frequency. I’m going to modify that frequency. Whoever used this place before, it’s ours now,” said the main universe Batman.
This was Batman's first time here, and he looked at the books on the bookshelf, the notebook, and the map.
"This guy looks formidable," said Batman the Adventurer, frowning. "If we raid his base, won't he come after us?"
“We are students of this school, and we have the right to use all the facilities on campus. Whoever he is, we have a more legitimate claim than him. Besides, we're the ones who don't even know who he is.”
“We’ve taken over his secret hideout, and I’m afraid he’ll make a move soon,” said Batman Arkham. “If he gets really angry and the Sorcerer Supreme discovers our whereabouts, then we’ll have a good show.”
